Our first couple of days in Hawaii

Happy Birthday, Jason! Had to get that out first. Sorry it's a liitle late.

First thing first: ALOHA, CA!!!
Second thing: You must all be thinking "What the heck is Pekiki???" Well, Pekiki is Beck in Hawaiian! So I figured the blog name could be Pekiki in Hawaii! And, it's better than a made up name like Beckilikiki (Joe came up with that couple of weeks back). I didn't want to offend or insult anyone if that actually meant something.
Third thing: Onto what Joe and I have been up too....

Thursday, April 28
So the day started off early with breakfast at my mom's house at 6:30 am. Then Jeff came by and picked us up at 7:30 am. We were off from there! We landed in Honolulu at 1:30 Hawaii time. That's 4:30 pm CA time.

We rounded up our luggage and headed to the rental car agency. I had reserved for us a small economy vehicle. We were ready to climb into a Ford Focus or something like it. But luck was on our side....they didn't have any compact cars available. So they put us in 4-door Jeep Wrangler! Joe is pretty excited since he's been looking into a Wrangler for awhile. :)

We took our sweet ride to Hawaii Kai which is located about 20 minutes east of Honolulu to our new home. We met our landlady, Linda; and she helped us move into our room. She's a bit crazy, but good hearted.

Our first day ended pretty uneventfully. To be honest, all the excitement and travel really wore us out. After dinner, we pretty much passed out to the sound of the fans running. (It was 81 degrees and muggy all day).

Here's some pictures we took while at Waikiki. If you looked west, you saw a beautiful sunset. But if you looked east, all you saw was dark, gloomy clouds. And then it started sprinkling on us. Awesome....81 degrees and rain. :)

Friday, April 29
Friday was spent being tourists, which was fun. That and looking for a car to buy. Being a tourist, FUN. Car shopping, YUCK.

Fun: We drove around the island visiting the 2 cities that we are looking to live in: Kailua and Kaneohe. Then we proceeded to the North Shore which was beautiful and then on towards BYU-Hawaii and the Temple. The day started off beautifully, but then ended up with a huge rainstorm! I hadn't really need ready for it, but we managed to stay pretty dry.

YUCK: While we were driving around, we decided to scope out a possible car purchase as the Lexus is back in CA waiting to be sold. Sigh....all I could do in regards to this was sulk because Joe and I had differing opinions on what to get. So, I sat in a Jetta (didn't drive it because it was wet from the rain), and talked to some other salesmen. And that was it.

Saturday, April 30
We started off the day by visiting Costco to fill up the Jeep. On average, gas is about $4.44/gallon. But luckily, gas at Costco was $4.29/gallon. Yup...we're not getting a 4-door Jeep anytime soon. I guess we're going to have to go much more fuel efficient that 17 miles to the gallon! Yikes!!! But....Costco had gelato for sale for $1.50! Three scoops in a waffle cone for $1.50. If I ever can't find Joe, I know where to find him. :)

We went and visited the USS Arizona Memorial today, which was a great lesson in history. I have to say that I have a greater appreciation that I did before for the men and women that serve to protect our nation. The memorial was a solemn reminder of their sacrifice.

As we left the harbor area and headed to Kaneohe, we drove over a bridge and saw the most beautiful, most vibrant double rainbow we had ever seen! I'm kind of mad that I didn't take a picture of it. :(

Today, we continued our car search. I test drove a Prius and decided that this fuel efficient car for me. I don't know what I want. But I know when I find it, it'll be perfect.

That's it for today! More to come later!!
